About our reader

If ReplyRainBot appeared in your server's log, this page says who it is, what it read, and how to close your site to it.

Who it is

ReplyRainBot is the reader of ReplyRain, a tool business developers use to write to companies. It announces itself in every request as Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; ReplyRainBot/1.0; +https://replyrain.com/legal/bot).

What it reads

  • Only the website of a company that is already in our base from an official company register, and only in a country whose law lets a stranger write to a company's general inbox.
  • Your robots.txt first. Then your home page and, when the home page shows no address, the one contact page it links to. Nothing else, and not again for 180 days.
  • Over https only, a page of ordinary size only, one site after another with a pause between them.

What it takes, and what it never takes

  • It takes one thing: the general address your company publishes for being written to, such as info@ or contact@, on your own domain. With it we keep the page it stood on and the day it was read.
  • It never takes the address of a named person, a private mailbox, a phone number, or the inbox for job applications, invoices, the press or complaints.
  • It never puts an address together from a name and a domain, never asks a mail server whether an address exists, and never undoes an address that was written so that programs would not read it.
  • If your page says that you do not want unsolicited offers, it takes nothing.

How to close your site to it

Add these two lines to https://your-domain/robots.txt. A rule for all robots (User-agent: *) is obeyed just the same.

User-agent: ReplyRainBot
Disallow: /

How to have an address removed

Use the data rights form: the address is erased and goes onto a list nobody can be shown or written to through ReplyRain. Every letter sent through the product also carries a one-click link that stops all senders who write through it.
